When to actually hold a garage sale in Yuma

Yuma runs on a different calendar to the rest of the country. Here the season is winter, the good days are Thursday through Saturday, and the whole thing is over by ten in the morning.

In most of America, garage sale season is spring and summer. In Yuma it’s the opposite, and for an obvious reason: nobody stands in a driveway in July. The season here tracks the weather and the winter visitors, and both of those point at the same window.

The short answer

October through April. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Open at 6 or 7 a.m.

Everything else on this page is the reasoning. If you only read one line, that’s the line — and the single biggest mistake we see is people opening at nine, by which time the buyers who actually spend money have already been to four other sales.

Why the season is what it is

  • The heat. From June through September, Yuma is routinely over 100 degrees and often well past it. It’s over ninety by nine in the morning. A summer sale isn’t just unpleasant for you — buyers don’t come out either.
  • The winter visitors. Yuma’s population swells by tens of thousands from roughly November to March. Snowbirds, RV parks, park models. That’s a large, mobile, cash-carrying audience that spends its mornings driving to sales, and it simply isn’t here in the summer.
  • The daylight. Winter mornings in Yuma are genuinely pleasant — highs in the upper 60s and 70s, sun up early, no wind most days. It’s about as good as garage sale weather gets anywhere.

Month by month

October – November

Season opening. The heat finally breaks and the first winter visitors arrive. Buyers are stocking up for the season and haven’t spent their budget yet. One of the two best windows of the year.

December – February

Peak. Full winter population, perfect weather, the most competition from other sales. Being early and being signposted matters more in these months than at any other time.

March – April

The exodus. Winter visitors start heading north and are trying to get rid of things, not buy them. Buyer traffic thins — but this is the best time of year to sell a whole household at once. More on that here.

May – September

Off-season. Too hot, and the winter population is gone. The exception is moving season — PCS orders and lease ends land in these months regardless of weather. If you’re moving, read this instead.

The days that work

Yuma sales run Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That’s not a rule, it’s just where the buyers are — the regulars plan a route on Thursday morning and run it again Friday. Saturday brings the widest crowd but also the most competing sales. Sunday is noticeably quieter here than in other parts of the country.

City code allows a sale of up to three consecutive days, which lines up exactly with a Thursday–Saturday run. That’s the standard format for a reason. The full ordinance is here — you also only get three sales a year at one address, so it’s worth using all three days each time.

The hours nobody tells you

  • 6:00–7:00 a.m. — open. Dealers and serious buyers are out at first light and they buy the good things.
  • 7:00–10:00 a.m. — the bulk of your money. Most sales earn 70–80% of their total in these three hours.
  • 10:00 a.m. onward — it slows down hard, and in the shoulder months it’s getting warm. This is bundle-and-discount time.
  • Advertise a start time and hold it. Early birds will come regardless, but posting 7 a.m. and opening at 8 costs you the best buyers of the day.

One thing worth planning for: whatever hasn’t sold by Saturday afternoon isn’t going to. Clothing in particular gets picked over early and then sits. Decide before the weekend what happens to it — because “back in the garage” is how it ends up there again next year.

Where we come into it

We buy the clothing and shoes, and we’ll do it at either end of your sale. Before it opens we pay hosts $20 cash for a first look, whether we buy anything or not. After it closes, send us photos of the pile nobody took and we’ll usually clear it. Either way it’s free, we come to you, and you’re not obligated to accept a number you don’t like.
